I had difficulty with the FD also. The plastic pulley is strong enough. I had to pull really hard on the cable while tightening the cable clamp bolt in order to get all the slack out of the cable. That was the only way I was able to get the FD to shift to the big ring.
I use a regular bike stand with the stand's clamp around the boom just aft of the pivot clamp. With the boom level, the rear wheel is hanging down and the bike swings around. I stabilize it by putting a 5 gallon bucket under the back wheel.

I spent a lot of time learning to ride my Vendetta on that road t00. Nice pavement and very little traffic. It is a really fast stretch. Especially if you're Larry. Nice KOM!
