Etap and Disc brakes

I have just assembled my Etap, Jagwire Pro cables and Spyre disc brake system.

I've not made it to the road, but I feel totally underwhelmed with the brake lever feel. It takes most of the lever travel to get a good grip on the rotor. Without riding it, I don't know how much braking power is being generated. They have a completely different feel than the brakes on my Quest.

I have not put tape on my bars. Without much effort I can squeeze the brake lever back to the handlebar. It will only get worst with a layer of tape chewing up travel distance.

Any ideas?

I have no suggestions, but I am interested in any potential solutions as well. I have a S40 with Spyre SLC brakes. It has long travel before the brake pads press the discs fully. I ended up twisting the briefers towards the center of the bike so that the brake levers can be squeezed past the bartape.

I have only ridden outside for about a hour before the raining session started in November. I think it stopped well once the pads were broken in.

In my recent research, I have learned about short pull and long pull mechanical calipers. With some certainty, I believe the Spyres are long pull. I have read some ads on Shimano like these that talk about short pull feature. I think the first ad states that it is compatible with STI levers.

The second one has some good information in the ad.

The caliper doesn't seem to be compatible with a 140mm disc. I think the problem is the clearance with the spokes. When the caliper gets mounted so close to the hub it can contact the spokes. This happens to be something I have recently experienced. I think certain hubs are better than others. Some have more space between the disc face and the spokes.

I have Sram Rival road brifters. Spyre brake is supposed to work. I guess it does work but just with longer than ideal pull. I prefer the short pull on my DF bike with Ultegra rim brakes.

It is very important to have a continuous brake compression less outer, especially to the rear brake, as for me on the Silvio V1.0, with 3 short length of outer and rim brakes, there was a lot of compression at each of the tab points, even with filed flat outer ends, and replacing with ONE length of outer reduced the brake lever movement to 50% of the original!

As the Spyre brakes actuate on both sides, there is no self aligning pad on one side, so it is very important to set the brakes up Parallel to the disc!
After bedding in the pads, AND seating the brake cable /outer, the braking effect will improve, and the increased pad clearance can be reduced back so the pads are just not rubbing.
