The best endurance recumbent road bike is fanatically loved because it delivers hill climbing power, insane comfort and speed in an efficient, lightweight design. Hi @David! Thanks for your question! None of our complete bikes ship with gravel-specific tires. But if you’re interested in gravel tires, you can swap them out on our complete builds or choose a frameset option for the Cruzbike S40 and work with your local bike shop to build it up to your exact specifications. The Cruzbike Q45 might also be worth a look!
Are any of the bikes come with gravel tires?
Hi @John! You absolutely can ride comfortably on the Cruzbike S40 with flat pedals and we often do, depending on the type of ride. Platform pedals are also the best setup to learn to ride. Clip in pedals and shoes will improve your pedal stroke efficiency but are not necessary.
The best option for building up an S40 to your spec is to order the frameset (which comes with the front derailleur stalk) and build it up with your local bike shop. However, if the complete option is more appealing, I can tell you the 1x set up is really great and very versatile. You could always change to two chain rings in the front once you get comfortable on the bike and know exactly what you want. The short answer to your question is that we do not have a custom complete option for the S40.
I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions we can help answer. We are always available at support@cruzbike.com
Hi @Tom! Your friend and riding partner is in for a great time with the Cruzbike S40! If they purchased the bike from us, they will be receiving step by step instructions for learning to ride the bike via email. There are also great resources on our website and always great encouragement and community on the Cruzbike Forum and Cruzbike Recumbent Riders Facebook group (which was created and is managed independently by owners).
Here are some of the resources from our website and YouTube as well:

My. friend and riding partner just bought one. My question is about learning to pedal. Ideas etc welcome
Can I ride an S40 comfortably with the newer flat pedals with spikes around the edges or do I need some form of clip on shoes? Can I order an S40 with dual front chainrings, derailure, etc already installed? What would the added cost be?
-John
Will the bike cast extra for me to buy in the UK?
If I bought one I would be a good advert for ypu as I am 90 years old.
On the other hand you might think “best not.”
Regards Mike
@Calvin Gen 6 vs Gen 5: stay tuned, more details coming soon. Fairings for the S40 or V20: not from Cruzbike. Too much danger/liability in cross winds. Our bikes do relatively well in strong cross winds (see my upcoming blog about the race in Borrego Springs, California last weekend), but personally I would not put a full or front fairing on a Cruzbike or any bike. Our Race Cage tailbox does improve aerodynamic drag without being a fairing, while offering easy access storage. Seat angle on S40 or V20 is fixed, but the optional CF Adjustable Seat will sit you up a bit more if you feel too reclined on either model. I agree the S40 is a great all-around bike, but there are those of us that prefer the V20c. If I had to choose just one, it would be the V20c. People may disagree, and that is OK.
I’m interested in what the S40 Gen 6 adds over the Gen 5. I’m also interested in a couple of add-ons. 1. Is there a compatible fairing for either the S40 or V20 I can get, and how much added speed would it offer to each? 2. Is there an option (build or add on) to move the seat angle between 20 and 40 degrees on the V20? I’d probably go for the V20C for the increased speed on flat surfaces if it came with an adjustable seat. But until that’s an option, the hill climbing, plus better view, advantages of the S40 make it an all around better choice for me. I’m sure that’s what others feel as well…so if you want more V20 riders, something to think about. Thanks! Calvin
