Competitive Road Cyclist Experience on the Cruzbike S40

Editor's note: Thanks to Greg, a competitive road cyclist, for sharing his experience making the switch to the best recumbent road bike out there - a Cruzbike! Experiences like Greg's are fuel for us over here at Cruzbike.
How the Cruzbike S40 Got Me Back on the Road
Making the switch from traditional road bike to Cruzbike recumbent road bike
After decades as a competitive cyclist, years of riding traditional diamond-frame bikes finally caught up with me. I began experiencing back, wrist, and knee issues, and my doctors told me those bikes were a major contributor. I wasn’t ready to stop riding—but I needed a change.
After researching alternatives, I chose the Cruzbike S40, seeking a bike with a more ergonomic, body-friendly design and upright riding position. It turned out to be exactly what I needed.
Assembly and learning
When the box arrived, I was a little overwhelmed, but the assembly videos made the process simple—I had it together in just a few hours. To learn, I practiced in an empty parking lot, starting with straight lines, turns, and smooth stops. After a few sessions, I was ready for the open road.
Those first rides were cautious—I was a “white-knuckle” rider at first—but within 100 miles, I was comfortable, and by 150 miles, I could finally relax and enjoy the ride. The upright position of the S40 offers incredible visibility and comfort. No more staring at the front tire or craning my neck to see the road ahead. Even better, my back and wrist pain are completely gone.
Refinements and comfort
At around 500 miles, I upgraded to Shimano PD-M8100 clip-in pedals and added a dual water bottle mount behind the headrest—both great improvements. Now, with nearly 1,500 miles logged, I can ride one-handed, drink comfortably, and hold a line with fingertip control.
Next season, I plan to extend my rides into the Sierra Nevada foothills and explore California’s legendary Highway 1.
My advice to other riders
- Buy a Cruzbike! Don’t wait—you’ll wish you had done it sooner.
- Use the assembly videos and check your setup after your first few rides.
- Be patient—your balance and handling skills will come quickly.
- Switch to clip-in pedals once you’re comfortable; it’s a total game changer.
- Enjoy the view and the comfort.
- There are cheaper bikes, but none that match the comfort, quality, and performance of the Cruzbike. My high-end carbon DF bike cost more and caused far more pain and downtime.
The Cruzbike S40 has completely transformed how I experience cycling. It’s comfortable, fast, beautifully engineered, and—most importantly—pain-free. I only wish I had made the switch sooner.

I was a serial Everester and audax rider but fibromyalgia got me and made it too painful to ride a DF bike. I got an S40 and although I no longer have the energy to for endurance riding I ride in comfort and can still enjoy the experience.
