T50e Battery upgrade

We may not make the T50e (T50 with electric-assist) anymore, but those of us who still have one (and love it!) will, sooner or later, need a new battery.  This blog explains how I replaced my battery rather affordably, and actually ended up with a battery with more capacity/range than the original (7 Ah vs. 10 Ah).

First, I purchased this from AliExpress.  https://www.aliexpress.us/

Your final price may vary. It took about a month to get to my home in the US. To install, disconnect the red and black cables that run from the existing battery bracket to the controller and remove the existing battery and battery bracket from the bike. Use the two bolts that you just removed to install the new battery bracket. Note that it is bigger than the old one. Make sure you install it with clearance for the front tire.

The electric wire connectors are different than the old ones. I cut the old connectors off, leaving a few inches of wire and cut the wires from the new bracket, then spliced them together securely so that the new bracket could hook up to the old controller. I used the heat shrink kind of connector, but you can use whatever gives a good secure connection. Then I installed the new battery and locked it in place with the new key that comes with the battery/bracket. The old charger works fine. This battery does not come with a charger.

The entire job took about 10-15 minutes.

My splice job:

The new battery is bigger with more Amp-Hour capacity.

Final look on the bike, and it works very well:

This upgrade has given new life to my old T50e, which remains a really fun way to get around town.
