Go fast. Climb fast.

Performance on any road.

The ultimate endurance recumbent road bike must thrive in the flats and in the mountains. The S40 does. It climbs powerfully, descends beautifully and flat out flies on open roads.

The Cruzbike S40 leverages our patented Dynamic Boom Front Wheel Drive which links the upper and lower body across the drivetrain as it rotates around the axis of the head tube. This linkage allows you to boost power when climbing or sprinting by engaging the upper body in much the same way professional cyclists do when they climb or sprint on traditional road bikes.

Cruzbike S40 Recumbent Bike Tech Specs and Fit

Frame

Lightweight, road-smoothing hydroformed aluminum frame. The S40 recumbent road bike's wheelbase, trail, and head-tube angle deliver smooth handling, natural cornering and a responsive ride whether you are descending at top speed or navigating twisting back roads.

    Front Triangle

The famously stiff patented drive system that vaults Cruzbike racers to records and wins, powers the S40 recumbent road bike. It shares the stiff, efficient drive geometry of traditional road bikes and transforms performance cycling technology into an incredibly fun, liberating cycling experience. It also makes Cruzbikes the fastest-climbing recumbent bike in the world.

This patented drive system not only frees us from the long, inefficient chains and special parts fixed-boom recumbent bikes require, it links the upper and lower body across the drive train as it rotates around the axis of the head tube. This linkage allows Cruzbike recumbent bike riders to increase power when climbing or sprinting by engaging the upper body in much the same way professional cyclists do when they climb or sprint on traditional road bikes.

      Seat-to-Frame-to-Drive Connection

The Cruzbike S40's carbon fiber seat fits the curve of the frame so that no watt is wasted. As you press your back into the frame, you engage your whole body through the handlebar and cranks. Energy surges through the drive system and powers the bike forward, leaping up hills or accelerating into a sprint.

        Fork

The Cruzbike S40 fork is designed to accommodate a range of setups from fast endurance road to plush Roubaix-style adventure with beefier tires. Plus clearance at the crown allows for fenders and wide tires. The product team chose the tough, versatile Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x32c tire for the S40 Complete for its versatility and performance so you can ride whatever road is calling your name, day after day.

          Racks and Bosses

The Cruzbike S40 is the machine for fast commuting, multi-day rides, brevets and tours. Possibilities abound when your recumbent bike is fast, light, comfortable and ready to be outfitted for the demands of your cycling ambitions. The frame boasts threaded mount points for racks, panniers, lights, fenders and hydration.

            S40 Gen 6 Complete Components

Gen 6 sees the return of SRAM. The SRAM components we have chosen deliver excellent performance and are our favorite S40 build yet. We also upgraded to full compressionless cable housing for both the front and rear brakes. Some components - the Cane Creek Viscoset, KMC chain, our  proven reliable hubs - are proven to last and return once again to grace this beautiful frame.

Headset Cane Creek ViscoSet® Headset (This premium headset leverages viscous damping to make learning easier and improve handling)
            Shifter SRAM APEX 1x11 Road
Crankset SRAM Apex 165 w/ 110 BCD Narrow Wide Ring (1X) 42T chainring
            Bottom Bracket SRAM GXP
            Cassette SRAM 11-42
            Chain KMC X11-1 EPT Anti-Rust 1/2"x11/128" EPT
            Brakes TRP Spyre Dual Piston
Wheels and Tires 32 spoke 3 cross black aluminum rims, aero profile, tubeless compatible, 25 mm wide rim, approx 28 mm depth non-machined sidewalls, Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x32c tires
Thru-Axles The latest in high-end cycling axles attach the wheels more securely, are stiffer and flex less than their quick release predecessors, resulting in better power transfer and more resilience. For the new thru-axle on the S40 we chose a sleek, leverless style that even houses its own internal removal tool for the axle itself and brake rotors.

            Back pain gone

It definitely has a long learning curve, but my upper right back pain is gone. I am still struggling with going up hills and trying to keep up with the group. Hopefully, I learn to navigate hills better.

            Amazing!

What a fantastic job Cruzbike does with customer service! I started looking into recumbent bicycles after having 2 unexpected spinal surgeries in a 6 month period and nerve damage in my left leg. I was concerned about my traditional road bike making my back even worse. I stumbled across Cruzbike and was intrigued by the design. I had some questions and scheduled a video call with Jim. I ended up choosing the S40 over the V20 due to the 100-mile guarantee program. I have now ridden it twice, my second ride being 8 miles. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to learn to ride it, especially after not being able to ride for months during my recovery. However, I took to it right away, and I am so happy I’ve found a way to keep riding, hopefully for a long time! I have no experience with other recumbents, but I was able to make it up a 3% grade hill from a complete stop at 10 mph, and I had not ridden in months. The S40 truly is a pleasure to ride, and I can’t wait to spend more time with it!

Are you Waiting for a better Recumbent? It's Here!

Most people who consider a buying a recumbent bike, their back, neck and saddle pain problems encourages a different type of bike. The Cruzbike S-40 was the most logical choice for me. Personally, I have found the S-40 to be great choice for speed, stability and comfort. It took about three weeks, practicing every day, for 15-30 minutes to complete Cruzbike’s recommended “Learning to Ride scenarios”. (I put my S-40 on an off wheel trainer over the winter to help build the “recumbent muscles”). Then another five hundred miles to become proficient enough to ride with friends and handle real world obstacles. Do I recommend the S-40 to my friends, absolutely! Is the bike fast, yes! Is the bike comfortable to ride, yes! Should you consider the s-40, yes, but you have to make a commitment to the “learning to ride process”. The fact that Cruzbike's use “normal” components makes them less expensive to maintain and component friendly. Thanks Cruzbike for a great buying and learning experience!

            Switching to FWD!

Hi I’ve been obsessed with recumbents for around 5 years now and bought 5! They’re amazing in their own way once you get to know how they like to ride! But… There was always a slight issue in that with such a long chain line, there’s a long long way for your pedal power to transmit to the rear wheel which I reckon is why they can be a bit lacking in pull and torque when climbing hills. So I was very interested in more local direct power ie a fwd bike - a Cruzbike! I bought my S40 November 2023. Assembled it, had it checked ✅ and good to go. It didn’t take me too long, a couple of evenings round the block to get my upper body & bars in sinc with my front wheel! Yes it’ll feel totally totally foreign but go with it. As you pedal, you harness either side of the bars left / right / left / right and you’ll soon become addicted to the powerful straight line forwards!! Before I knew it I was going further and further and 60 miles later… It’s very comfortable, easy to get in and out, easy to manoeuvre, I tip the bike on its front wheel, use the front brake to control it and hold the rear end high up grabbing the neck rest. You could weave through small flat or a train carriage no problem. The rear weighs nothing. To ride, I find being a swb, it’s an easy bike to handle. Super smooth ride. Hills, short crests, I beat my roadbike mates because you really can put the power through the bike - and it absolutely flys !! Longer climbing, just relax and spin but with upper body strength and training, you could maintain quite powerful climbing! But just spinning as though a normal rwd recumbent, it’s definitely faster and easier and less foot pressure (I reckon because your powering a shorter chain and crank??) I’ve modified my wheels to Zipp 303s with Schwalbe Pro 1 tubeless tires. It now rides like I’m on a fast carpet!!! It’s about to have hydraulic brakes and Shimano 105 groupset fitted with a lovely 36/52 tooth front chain ring so my top end cruising will be amazing while steep hills still no worries. It’s a fast bike, goes anywhere and totally practical too. Well done Cruzbike, it’s a great recumbent no question! Cheers Oliver in London

            Comfortable and fun to ride

I'm delighted with my S40. I've struggled with saddle discomfort for years, but the S40 allows me to ride pain-free. The S40 was my first recumbent, so there was a bit of a learning curve. But now that I've gotten the hang of it, it's a blast to ride. I can ride for hours and hours with no discomfort. My husband always comments on how happy I look when I'm on my Cruzbike. My only regret is that I didn't buy one sooner.

            Cruzbike S40 Owner Resources

            • Recently, a customer asked if he needed to think about getting a new Cruzbike S40 since he has put 18,000 miles on his. Our answer? Nope, it will go for another 18,000 miles.
Like any small business, we love returning customers. But our bikes are incredibly high quality machines that are built to last.

And because they are wicked-fast and fun to ride, they don't get dusty in the corner of your garage or basement.

So go on, put tens of thousands of miles on your Cruzbike and upgrade if you like a new feature set or you want to add a new model to your stable.

If you haven't jumped on your own Cruzbike yet, we hope Greg's experience will encourage you:

"I am a S40 owner for over five years. I have now put over 18,000 miles on my S40 and ride it all the time! I love it! One of the reasons I asked about replacing my 2019 S40 is that my mechanic said that 18,000 on one bike is a lot of miles. But, he also said my S40 is in great condition for that many miles.

It may sound crazy, but I enjoy the attention I get on my S40. I hear things like "Cool Bike," "Wow, that looks comfortable," or "Is it hard to ride?" I love telling people about it and how much I enjoy riding it! My brother now owns an S40 and Q45." - Greg L., Idaho
